Plot
The game is said to include a new, original and non-linear[13] storyline “showcasing some of the game’s oldest characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil that tie the tale together.”[14] It was announced the story would begin at the end of the previous game and then eventually transition to 25 years into the future, placing emphasis on aged veterans, new characters, and the next-generation offspring of the previous fighters.
Following the defeat of Shao Kahn, Shinnok attacks Earth with his army of Netherrealm forces, including the resurrected Earthrealm warriors who were killed during Kahn’s invasion and are now under Quan Chi’s control. After fighting and freeing their former comrades, a strike team led by Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Kenshi open a portal to the Jinsei Chamber, the source of Earthrealm’s life force, where Raiden and Fujin are battling Shinnok. They distract Shinnok long enough for Raiden to steal Shinnok’s amulet and imprison him inside it, but Quan Chi manages to escape.[20] Johnny and Sonya’s team are later manage to infiltrate Quan Chi’s fortress before his return. Raiden arrived when Johnny gets impaled by a revenant Jax before Sonya defeats her revenant friend. With Sonya able to knock Quan Chi out and a same time Raiden prevents Johnny’s death to be revived as a revenant, Quan Chi’s spell has been broken, leading a revival of the revenant that Quan Chi has brought with, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Jax. Afterwards, Quan Chi escaped again.
